Independent expert in data anonymization & de-identification

Helping organizations make confident, defensible decisions about data use.

My focus

My name is Renate van Kempen, an independent data anonymization expert specializing in re-identification risk assessment and privacy-preserving data sharing.

This is a niche I initially discovered during my work as a data scientist, and quickly realized how critical it is for organizations working with data.

What started as a technical specialization became a clear focus:
supporting organizations in understanding and applying anonymization correctly, so they can safely use and share data.

Why this work matters

Many organizations are still figuring out how to approach anonymization.

Even large and mature organizations often lack the specific expertise needed to:

  • assess re-identification risk
  • apply anonymization techniques correctly
  • align legal, data, and security perspectives

At the same time, the need to use data is only increasing.

This creates a gap between:

  • what organizations want to do with data
  • and what they can safely and confidently do

My work focuses on bridging that gap.

What clients value

Clients typically work with me when they need:
  • specialized anonymization expertise
  • an independent perspective
  • practical guidance instead of only theory
  • alignment between legal, data, and security teams
My approach is:
  • independent
  • practical
  • flexible
  • technically grounded

Experience and expertise

I have over 5 years of experience as an anonymization specialist.

My work has primarily focused on healthcare-related organizations, including:

  • medical technology companies
  • pharmaceutical and diagnostics organizations
  • clinical research environments

I also support organizations in other sectors, as anonymization is relevant wherever personal data is used.

I have worked with organizations across:

  • Europe
  • the United States and Canada
  • and Asia

This provides a strong understanding of different regulatory expectations and practical challenges.

MedTech Europe & knowledge sharing

MedTech Europe & knowledge sharing

I work with MedTech Europe as a trainer and expert consultant, supporting members in understanding and applying their anonymization framework.

In addition, I actively share knowledge through:

  • Complimentary workshops on anonymization
  • Practical guidance and tools
  • Ongoing development of resources such as tool comparisons

My goal is not only to support individual projects, but also to help organizations build a stronger understanding of anonymization overall.

Need clarity on anonymization?

Anonymization is complex, but it does not have to be unclear.
With the right approach, it enables safe and responsible data use.
